Rhode wins local fishing
tournament
From staff reports
SANDUSKY -
Jared Rhode put some home-field advantage to
good use.
Home-water advantage would be a bit more accurate as
the Sandusky High science teacher claimed the top
spot in the Boaters Division Saturday at the
Wal-Mart
Bass Fishing League tournament which took off from
the Shelby Street boat ramp in Sandusky.

"This was a really good stepping stone for me to win
this tournament," Rhode said. "I'm trying to move up
to bigger tournaments and this is the biggest I've
won. To win this on my home water where people
expect you to do well makes you feel pretty good."
Rhode, who lives in Port Clinton, claimed the top
prize of $3,870 by landing five smallmouth bass
weighing 19 pounds 14 ounces.
"I fished out around Pelee Island in 25 feet of
water with tube jugs and a drop-shot right," he
said. "It was really rough, so being a local and
knowing how to handle a 25-foot bass boat in these
waters really helped me out.
"It was rough, but fishing for me was excellent."
John Marchbanks of Toledo and John Viox of Hebron,
Ky., tied for second to Rhode. Marchbanks and Viox
each hauled in five fish weighing 18-7 and each
received $1,532.50 in prize money.
Mike Trombley of Perrsburg, Ohio, finished fourth
and won $859. He ended the day with a total of five
fish weighing 18-5.
Fifth place went to George Boston of Marysville,
Ohio, who caught five fish weighing 17-7.
Castalia's Stephen Ritterbach finished in 45th
place. He caught two fish weighing 5-10.
In the co-anglers division, Daryl Stykes of Ripley,
Ohio, took top honors. Stykes caught five fish
weighting 19-pounds to take home the $1,820 in prize
money.
Rick Moore placed second as he caught five fish
weighing 17-15. The Hamilton, Ohio, native won $910
for finishing second.
Finishing just behind Moore in third place was Jeff
Bierman of Maineville, Ohio. Bierman won $607 for
catching five fish weighing 17-10.
Darrell Carroll of Independence, Ky., took fourth
place while Roy Lester of Hamilton, Ohio, finished
in fifth. Carroll caught five fish weighting 17-3 to
win $425. Lester won $364 with his bounty of five
fishing weighing 17-2.
